![]() PLACE VALUE 1
Place value is an extremely important concept that you need so that you are able to read larger numbers. Place value refers to the value of the digit based on its position. In our decimal number system, the value of a digit depends on its place, or position, in the number. Each place has a value of 10 times the place to its right. A number in standard form is separated into groups of three digits using commas. Each of these groups is called a period. |

When ordering three-digit numbers, look at the hundreds first. Talk through the thinking process if three-digit numbers have the same hundreds value. 367 and 374 both have three hundreds. If I look at the tens digit I can see that 367 has 36 tens and 374 has 37 tens, 37 tens is more than 36 tens so 374 must be larger than 367.

Make 100 or 1 000
Use the Base ten materials – units (1), longs (10), flats (100) and blocks (1 000) and die
Play with a friend
1. Roll die and the highest number goes first.
2. Play in turn by rolling the die and taking the appropriate amount of units, longs, flats, etc. The first roll determines the tens and the second roll determines the ones.
e.g. a roll of 19 = 1 long (10) and 9 oness (1s)
3. Continue adding the blocks together and make appropriate exchanges as needed.
4. The winner is the first to reach the targeted number: 100 or 1 000.
